Welcome back to BBC Learning English where today we are going to look at 『both’, 『either’ and 『neither’.
In all three cases, we are talking about two things.
We use 『both’ to talk about 2/2 things. So for example, 『Both tea and coffee contain caffeine.』
Tea contains caffeine, and coffee contains caffeine.
We use 『neither’ to talk about 0/2 things. So for example, 『Neither coffee nor tea contain alcohol.』
Coffee doesn’t contain alcohol, and tea doesn’t contain alcohol.
We use 『either’ to talk about 1/2 things. So 『In the morning, I drink either tea or coffee.』
Not both, just one.

All three words are used to talk about two things.

Both means two of two things.

Neither means zero of two things. We use ‘neither… nor…’ to specify what the two things are.
