For 900 years, kings and queens have been crowned at Westminster Abbey. On the 6th of May next year, the Archbishop of Canterbury will conduct the coronation, anointing, blessing and consecrating King Charles III.

In 1953, 8,000 people were in Westminster Abbey to see Queen Elizabeth II crowned. It was the first televised coronation – more than 27 million people watched across the UK. It was an event steeped in pomp and pageantry.

Next year’s ceremony will look different. Palace sources say it’ll be shorter, smaller and more diverse, reflecting the role of a modern monarch, while still being rooted in long-standing traditions.

Coronations are grand spectacles, a chance to showcase the rich, royal heritage of the UK to a global audience, reaching hundreds of millions. The coronation of King Charles III will still reflect that.

Saturday the 6th of May was chosen to avoid clashing with other major events planned for early summer. All members of the Royal Family are expected to be invited.
